I am a fan of the original black&white version of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Even commented on the movie before on this blog.
At the end of that movie Klaatu and Patricia Neal board the flying saucer and zoom off. But Klaatu tells the assembled scientists of Earth that it still is our decision whether the Earth joins the rest of the galaxy and forgoes the Cold War or suffers annihilation.
In the new version due out in theatres tommorow, Keanu Reeves' Klaatu is not as kind and compassionate as Michael Rennie's. In fact he is an ET version of Azrael sent to expunge prostrate Gaia of an infestation. That infestation being humanity itself.
I think I will stay at home and watch the original version.
