Germany's Ghosts

World War II in Germany is just a flyleaf on a book away. Might be found on a stretch of road.  Or that person sitting next to you on the S-Bahn in Hamburg or Berlin.

Margot Friedlander was rounded up in April of 1944 after being in hiding for 13 months.  She was sent to the concentration camp of Theresienstadt which is now in the Czech Republic.  She met her husband there and they emigrated to the United States after the war.  Since neither had family left in Germany they had vowed to never return.  Time moves on and Margot's husband died.  She wrote of her wartime experiences and even had readings of her story.  A German producer happened to hear one of her readings and invited her to come back to Germany for a show.  She did and then something incredible happened, Margot decided to live in Berlin. She tells her story to German youth who know of the Final Solution only in books.  She gives a voice and face to the horror the Nazis inflicted upon people.

In Aachen Germany the locals are trying to preserve a tangible piece of World War II history.  Aachen was the first German town to fall to the advancing Allied armies.  The fighting was fierce as the Germans tried to hold the Siegfried line, thus casualties on both sides were heavy.  Directing the German defenses of Aachen was the Lousberg bunker.  The bunker still exists but has now been sold to developers who want to turn it into apartments.

Another bit of Germany's Nazi past is about to be paved over.  Near Berlin is the A11 motorway.  About 2.5 miles of the road is still the original surface that was laid down by the Nazis when they first built the autobahns.  After many decades and heavy traffic, the concrete road surface is in such poor shape it will be replaced in 2015.  Thus erasing the last bit of the original autobahn.

Finally there is the story of Jennifer Teegee of Hamburg.  Her mother is German and her father is Nigerian.  Until she saw a book in the library and on the flyleaf a picture of the author she had no idea of her family history. She had been given up for adoption and when she did see her birth mother, Monika never talked about it.  But from that book she learned that her mother was the illegitimate daughter of Amon Goeth, the real life Butcher of Plaszow as depicted in Schindler's List.  Jennifer had seen the movie while in Israel and knew her birth name, but she never made the connection until reading that book.  Since that discovery, Ms. Teegee has embarked on a quest to fully understand her heritage and family history.

What Is Frightening?

That the things I have been worrying about since the President drew his bold red line have been echoed by Laughing Wolf over on Black Five.  It is sobering to know someone else has been comparing the sitting President with the fictional Robert 'Bob' Fowler from Clancy's Sum of All Fears and finding the real President wanting in comparison.

Or the alliances in the region are mobilizing in much the same way they did in 1914 in Sarajevo.  One madman kills a noble that almost no one knew about and the gears of war started to turn as all the years of treaties came into effect as Austria tried to browbeat Serbia into giving up the assassin.  So the Serbs called in their Russian allies while Austria called in Germany.  And it just escalated from there.  What resulted from all of that smart diplomacy was four years of brutal carnage that killed millions and set the stage for a greater conflict.

An even more brutal question to ask will there be a US lead alliance in regards to the murky issue of who gassed whom in Syria?  The British Parliament just said no to Prime Minister Cameron's request for supporting the Americans, the first time they have said no since 1782 and the American Revolution.  The French and Germans are going soft as well; they should when it concerns American consistency, they just have to look at the series of slights and insults this Administration has delivered to England along with betraying European missile defense for a nebulous promise from Russia.  A Russia that supplies Europe with a majority of the natural gas it will need to stay warm this winter.  A Russia that supports the Assad regime in Damascus.  Europe sees more downsides than upsides for joining the American charge.

Then there are the Middle Eastern nations to look at.  Iran likes Assad in power and has threatened Israel if the US attacks.  Saudi Arabia finds itself wanting Assad in power in order to keep the Muslim Brotherhood out of power.  Saudi Arabia is also supporting the current government in Egypt for the same reason - fear of the Muslim Brotherhood.  And the United States, because of the decisions of this Administration, finds itself in opposition to Saudi Arabia, a long time ally, and supporting the Muslim Brotherhood both in Egypt and Syria.  Turkey has refused to assist the United States in regards to Syria so Greece had to be asked to allow the US to use Greek air bases.

If this is not a powder keg with a fuse lit, then I do not know what is.  And for what reason is the US getting involved when there are no geo-political reasons that can protect American interests?  Because of one reported attack on civilians by someone using chemical weapons.  No one knows if it really was Assad's forces that did it or even the rebels themselves that did it by accident.  This is far worse in murkiness than when USS Turner Joy thought it was being attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats.  But we have a President who said this was a Red Line even though in the past when Saddam used nerve agents on Kurds or Assad's father obliterated a town with artillery to stop a Muslim Brotherhood insurgency no one protested so loudly that these heinous attacks were used as reasons to depose either tyrant.

As Laughing Wolf said, we are going to be held hostage to the least stable actor in this drama.  Isn't that a cheery thought.  So if you are a devout praying person, please pray harder.



Addendum on the parallels from 1914.
There is the diplomatic war that was fought in concert with the war effort.  England wanted the neutral powerhouse the United States to enter the war on their side.  Wilson became President in no small part because he promised to keep the country neutral to the conflict that was devouring Europe so people with similar feelings voted for him. 

Churchill as First Sea Lord engaged in stratagems that are a bit shabby and dishonest viewed from this end of history; from painting British ships in American colors to putting war materials aboard passenger liners, but what he wanted was England to emerge victorious.  Meanwhile the Royal Navy was hunting German U-boats where they could.  All these actions forced Germany to abandon the cruiser rules and turn to unrestricted warfare on the open seas against any ship they found. 

So the German U-boats became wolves prowling for kills.  Any kills.  It was scant comfort to the families of the dead from these attacks that Germany had followed the rules of war by announcing a zone around England where unrestricted warfare would be prosecuted.  The Huns in the U-boats were now butchers.  The same was not used to describe German commerce raiders but those ships did not skulk below and strike from hiding, instead they still operated under the cruiser rules and treated their captured as well as could be expected.

Another arrow in the cap that helped tilt American opinion in favor of England was a master stroke of counter-espionage by British spooks.  I am referring to the famous Zimmerman telegram where Germany's Foreign Minister tried to entice Mexico into attacking the United States.  That really incensed the American public when it became news and further destroyed any warm feelings that sections of the populace felt towards Germany.

The sinking of the RMS Lusitania was just the final act that brought the US into WWI on the British side.  While the US tried to stay out of the war, events conspired against the President that stripped him of any freedom of action.  And that is how the United States entered World War I on the side of the Serbian assassin since England was an ally of the Russians who were the ally of the Serbs who sheltered the assassin.

Boston Marathon

Words can not adequately express the grief and the soul wrenching hurt such events create.  All I can think of are the people who's lives have been shattered with the loss of loved ones or loss of limb.  All because some coward had to strike at innocent people for a sick and twisted cause.

To work through this I have created a simple slideshow.  I am not sure if what I did is any good.  But I wanted to show how the marathon was before the dreadful explosions and some may disagree with some images.  But I felt this was how to do it.  There are no high value special tansitions or fades, just a timeline progression.

A Dreadful Horseman

It should come as no surprise to anyone that one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse has been loose in North Korea.  Well at this point I think even Famine should be retching his guts out on the ground.  The starving, oppressed, enslaved people of North Korea have been reduced to cannibals.  To find sustenance they have resorted to eating their children.  Yep even eating the corpses of their children.

Now I have a question all you world leaders and beautiful people who are always screaming about some calamity across the globe.  What are you going to do with North Korea?

Actually that is a rhetorical question.  They will do nothing because to do something truly constructive requires real effort. 

For the world leaders, they would have to admit how badly they have fumbled North Korea all these years.  For Beijing to allow its useful toy to be deposed.  Jimmy Carter to admit fault.  Madeline Albright to take her basketball and go home.  Things that will never happen because that would mean admitting they are not perfect.

For the pretty people its even worse.  To work on something besides keeping fit, eating their organically grown vegan overpriced food, wearing fabulous clothes, ride in limos, and go on talk shows.  Something selfless instead of selfish.

What a horrible brutish world exists in North Korea.  And the ones who clamor for Syrian intervention won't say the same thing about North Korea.  Pox upon them and their works.

Aurora

So far the only class acts about Aurora, CO have come from Obama, Romney, and the NRA. As in they are offering condolences and prayers.

For the pond scum who have raced to clamber atop the still warm bodies of the victims to push their cause like Garibaldi waving his bloody shirt, I have one thing to say - "Have you no shame?"

Of course they don't. All things are politics first and always for them. They don't care who they hurt as long as they push their agenda. They are monsters in their own right.

Lets all take a moment to pray for the victims and families.  Go donate blood for your community and dedicate it to those in Aurora. CO.  Move forward in a positive way for all those affected.

Libyan Thanks

Kudos to Powerline for this very sad tale.  There are cemeteries in Benghazi, Libya where the fallen soldiers and airmen of the British Commonwealth are buried.  According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission there are over 1,500 buried there.  They are sons, brothers, husbands, fathers from across the Empire - United Kingdom, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and even the Sudan Defense Force - all are buried here.  At least one Victoria Cross recipient is interred here.  All killed during World War II resisting Nazi aggression.  Even Italian war graves have also been attacked.  No word if the British war cemeteries at Tobruk or Knightsbridge have been attacked.

And now their resting places have been brutally attacked and defaced, over a hundred known so far.  The perpetrators?  The same people the RAF, USAF, and their NATO allies helped to liberate last year from the tyranny of now deceased despot Gaddafi.  They even filmed themselves toppling gravestones with Crosses and Stars of David while calling the deceased warriors dogs.  Even the Cross of Remembrance has been smashed as seen in the video that Powerline has.

The reaction from the United Kingdom government has been diplomatic and couched with the caveat that Islam does not condone destroying graves.  The Libyan transitional government has offered apologies.  The Australians are not as diplomatic, calling it a desecration and sickening though no word if any Australian graves were smashed.

I am sorry England, there are graves and then there are the graves of infidels.  All these men are infidels to their defilers and hence they do not belong in any land claimed by the faithful warriors of Islam. 

The Western nations need to tell the Libyans to clean up their mess.  To hold accountable to the fullest measure these criminals.  If little or no action is done to these vandals, then Libya should be allowed to slide back into the 7th Century they seem to desire.

Post script -  Talking about Libya and WWII always brings up the mystery of Lady Be Good, a B-24 Liberator that vanished with her crew during a bombing mission against Italy.  To this day the body of SSGT Vernon Moore has never been found, he is presumed lost in the vast southeastern desert sea that comprises the border between Libya and Egypt.  As for the plane's wreckage, it was last seen in 2001 in a Libyan police impound yard.

This Is Hate

FBI and local law enforcement officials in Oregon have broken an Islamic terror plot. The suspect planned to detonate a bomb during Portland's annual lighting of the tree ceremony. Luckily the FBI was monitoring his emails and were able to slip an informant in. This piece of garbage told investigators he had dreams since the age of 15 to do something like this. He sent the informant parts for a bomb, he emailed his plans to the informant, and was arrested after he parked his truck bomb near the event.

What makes my blood run cold about this whole event is how the FBI informant tried to dissuade this terrorist wanna-be from carrying out the attack. When he was told there would be children present, his responses make Eichmann seem a humane man.

"You know there's going to be a lot of children there?" an FBI operative asked Mohamud. "You know there are gonna be a lot of children there?" Mohamud allegedly responded he was looking for a "huge mass that will ... be attacked in their own element with their families celebrating the holidays."

And then he had this to say of his attack and consequences after testing a backpack bomb.

"I want whoever is attending that event to leave, to leave either dead or injured," Mohamud reportedly told the FBI operatives, the affidavit says.

I am sorry but this mutt does not deserve to be sentenced to life. In the name of his evil cause he was willing to kill and maim innocent children who had gathered to start the celebration for the birth of Christ, a respected teacher in his own faith. I suggest one 9mm transiting his cranium to send him directly to Dante's Inferno and the 9th circle.

Terrorists as Criminals Meme

Decided to extract another juicy bit of information from Kupperman and Kamen's book Final Warning. I will let all of you decide after this one example if treating terrorism as a common crime is really that smart.

From page 11 I will paraphrase. In April of 1988 New Jersey State Trooper Robert Cieplensky's suspicions were aroused at a rest stop on the New Jersey Turnpike by a Japanese man. After getting permission to investigate the man's car, Trooper Cieplensky found three red cylinders on the car's backseat. Suspecting them to be bombs, the man, later identified as Yu Kikumura, was quickly arrested. Mr. Kikumura waived a trail by jury and was convicted. Yu Kikumura is a member of the Japanese Red Army terrorist group with ties to North Korea and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. That Kikumura was in the United States was only because a year earlier he was released by a Dutch judge who ruled the police violated his rights. Kikumura was arrested at Schipol Airport with a bomb disguised as a can of breakfast food. X-ray machines could not discern it as a bomb, but there was 1Kg of explosives in there. The Dutch judge applied the probable cause criteria used in a routine burglarly to this case. So Kikumura was released only to turn up a year later in New Jersey.

For those who woke up to global terrorism after 9/11 and the Clinton vacation from history, a little information about the Japanese Red Army needs to be presented. The JRA was formed in 1971 in Lebanon by Fusako Shigenobu, dubbed the empress of terror. JRA's claim to international terror infamy came in May 1972 when they attacked passengers at Lod, now Ben Gurion, Airport in Tel Aviv where 24 were killed and 80 injured. Fusako Shigenobu is presently in Japanese prison serving a 20 year sentence in part for the taking of the French embassy in the Hague in September of 1974. She blames the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine for that attack. In 2001 she formally disbanded the JRA from her prison cell but vows to continue the struggle peacefully.

Please note that both Kupperman/Kamen's book in 1989 and the Guardian's article from December 13, 2008 link what is nominally a communist terrorist organization with that of a Palestinian terrorist organization. This should not come as a surprise as both share a common cause, the destruction of the West and both were bankrolled covertly by such as the USSR.

Lets get back to Yu Kikumura's case. Here is the DOJ rebuttal that the FBI's expert witness misled the judge during Kikumura's trial. What is telling is what was in those fire extinguisher casings.

The red cylinders were fire extinguishers that had been emptied and refilled with about three pounds of gunpowder, wadding, about three pounds of lead shot, and a flashbulb connected to some wires running out of the top. On one of the bombs, there was an assembled fusing system made from an electric timer, a toggle switch, some batteries, and jack connectors. This timer, Thurman concluded, would allow the bomb to be detonated up to an hour after it was set. The car also contained materials from which similar fusing systems for the other two bombs could be made.
Thurman testified about the bombs found in Kikumura's car. After describing their construction and stating that the completed timer was functional, Thurman discussed the destructive force of the bombs. He said that if the bombs were detonated in an occupied large room with a ten foot ceiling, there would be numerous casualties and significant property damage. He compared the bombs to Claymore mines and opined that, while they were capable of destroying property, they were meant as anti-personnel devices.

Two days after Kikumura was arrested in New Jersey, his comrades in the JRA attacked the USO Service Club in Naples, Italy. One US Navy enlisted woman and four innocent civilians were killed in the explosion.

In October, 2007 Yu Kikumura was released from a US Supermax prison and turned over to Japanese authorities. And there are people who think Yu Kikumura is a hero, an anti-imperialist, and a political prisoner. Like these people, don't click if you don't want to give them traffic but they want to help Yu Kikumura. They probably wear t-shirts with Che's image on it, another hero and anti-imperialist. Yuck.

Kristallnacht

November 9, 1938 should be a date to remember. Today marks the 70th Anniversary of this horrific event.

It was this night that the thuggish and evil forces of Hitler's Third Reich rampaged through Germany and Austria shattering what little peace of mind Jews had left. Crystal Night refers to the next morning when shattered panes of glass lay across pavement symbolizing the vandalism and destruction visited upon the Jews, their homes, their businesses, and their synagogues.

Planning the Shoah

This will be interesting, how will noted Holocaust denier Irving and other such spin this tale out of Berlin. Der Bild broke the story and then the Jerusalem Post picked it up.

28 pages, mainly drawn in 1:100 scale, showing the meticulous planning that went into creating Auschwitz and making it a death camp. In Gothic lettering the gas chambers are labeled 'Gaskammer.' One plan even has SS Kommander Heinrich Himmler's name on it signed in a green pen.

How much more evidence will some people require before they believe such evil was truly committed. Or will they only believe when they themselves are herded through a door into a dressing room and told they need to take a shower as part of processing? If so, then it would far too late.

What Evil Men Do

Ma'alot, Beslen, and now a religious school in Jerusalem. Words that could flow off my fingertips and translate into images online to be read freeze as anger and sorrow seize me.

There is no rationalization or alleged wrong that justifies the butchering of innocent children. Any who do such atrocities and any who support such butchers deserve to get the Mussolini treatment. Not one ounce of human sympathy should be spared for them.

A Voice Is Silenced

Today a very brave person died in one of the more horrific ways possible, via assassination. Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed while she campaigned for another term in that post. She came back to Pakistan knowing full well some wanted her dead. She had already survived other attempts, alas this time the AQ thugs succeeded in murdering her.

Lets remember her for what she was, the first woman to lead an Islamic country in a democratic way. A woman who braved death to accomplish that achievement. Who survived being overthrown and was possibly on the cusp of leading Pakistan again.

Lets put away the political calculations that seem to define everything and the macabre blame game some seem to revel in. Lets remember a human being was murdered and no one deserves to be murdered.

By their deeds, thou shall know them. By such horrendous deeds AQ proves once again how evil they are as they brutally push their barbarian agenda.

Charlie Wilson's War

This is supposed to be released this December, which means it could be nominated for an Oscar. Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts star in this movie about a boozing Congressman from Texas who launches his own jihad against the entrenched bureaucracy of the CIA to help the mujaheddin of Afghanistan resist the Soviet invasion of their country.



Vlad has some axes to grind with his own country but he projects them onto the book Charlie Wilson's War that the movie is based on in his review posted on Amazon.

"The direction of one sided, pro-government "journalism" which serves as one of the tools used to brainwash average American." I think that more accurately describes how TASS and other such official Soviet news organs presented the invasion and ten years of hell inflicted upon Afghanistan.
Did the United States really fund the 'freedom fighter' Taliban we now face as Vlad claims? No, after the Soviet withdrawal, the Taliban came out of Pashtun and with Saudi assistance quickly pushed back the United Islamic Front which was made up of parties that did receive funds from Charlie Wilson's end-around the CIA.
Was it all peaceful in Afghanistan before the flow of US funds and arms? Here Vlad is missing the mark because the USSR misread the whole mess in Afghanistan and saw it all through the lens of Marxism-Leninism and not the reality of how the country called Afghanistan really is.

• However, often our people, acting out of their best intentions, tried to transplant the approached we are accustomed to onto the Afghan soil, encouraged the Afghans to copy our ways. All this did not help our cause, it bred the feelings of dependency on the part of the Afghan leaders in regard to the Soviet Union both in the sphere of military operations and in the economic sphere.

In 1982 there was one report of Soviet forces killing a boy who protested the burning of the mosque's fuel. Or the mystery of some tribal leaders from Ghanzi being found dead and their bodies in advance state of decomposition though they had been in Soviet custody just a few days. Of course back in 1979 to 1981 there were reports that Secretary of State George Schultz stated were cases of the Soviets and their Afghan allies using chemical agents on anti-government forces.

When Gorbachev and the Soviet Union finally realized the futility of this mis-adventure, some 13,000 Soviet soldiers had paid the ultimate sacrifice while another 35,000 were wounded or disabled. Some in Russia still cling to the idea it was only due to the infusion of American supplied weapons and cash that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was thwarted. I would think Colonel Tsagalov, a veteran of the Red Army would disagree. In fact he did disagree and was sacked for his honesty.

Will this Tom Hanks movie be a decent recounting of what really happened, that remains to be seen. I might give this movie a whirl to find out.

Organleggers

In a future that Larry Niven postulated, the UN had pacified the Earth finally but the price was a hard and brutal control of all technology. So the Amalgated Regional Militias, ARM for short, were born to enforce the laws passed by the UN. One of the more gruesome crimes ARM investigated was called organlegging, the murder of people in order to sell their organs to some desperate person needing an organ not available through the UN controlled organ transplant program. Even though, in a bid to keep up with the demand for new organs, in this bleak future the dealth penalty could be imposed for a minor traffic violation and one's organs transplanted.

What brings up this trip down science fiction history was O'Reilly's last guest, Lisa Ling of National Geographic went under cover to follow a 21st century version of organlegging. It is called Inside the Body Trade. People travelling to places like India for a kidney since there is not enough donor organs in the US. It should be fascinating viewing, assuming it does not send you running to the bathroom to throw up in disgust.

Fashionista? Si! Revolutionary? No!

Hat tip Michelle Malkin who covers something far more important than super models parading around in a bikini memorializing one of history's most sadistic killers. Che muerte! Daughters of Lillith

Kathy Ainsworth[L] was considered to be a very nice and religious young lady. She was well liked and taught children in the 5th grade. Ahlam Tamini[R] comes from the other side of the world, the West Bank of Israel where she was a journalist. What links these two young women who seemed to have everything within their grasp, is the focus of their short lives - hatred of Jews.

Kathy was your typical Southern lady caught up in the turbulent times of a racially divided Mississippi in the 1960s. The Ku Klux Klan was active in the state against black Americans, white Americans who came down to support their brothers and sisters who happened to be black, and the Jewish congregations in Meridian and Jackson whom the KKK thought was the instigators of integration. After several bombings of synagogues and an attack on a rabbi, local police and the FBI decided to set a trap. Author Jack Nelson covered this story in his book Terror in the Night. So it was one night in 1968 that Kathy Ainsworth was sucked into this battle between the forces of order and the forces of hate. The trap was sprung on the suspected bomber whom informants working for the FBI had lured him in. By the time the last gunshot was fired, Thomas A. Tarrants III lay gravely wounded in the car while his partner in the attempted bombing, Kathy Ainsworth, lay dead beside him.

Ahlam Tamini is a native of Jordan, lived in Ramallah, studied at Bir Zeit, and was already a journalist by the age of 20. Her claim to infamy occurred on August 9th, 2001, when she acted as the guide for an Islamic suicide bomber in Jerusalem. Their target was a Sbarro pizza place crowded with women and young children. As the echo of the explosion faded away to be replaced by screams of anguish and pain, fifteen lay dead and another 130 wounded to one degree or another. Among those dead were children. Tamini was sentenced to sixteen life terms for her part in this hideous attack.
