April 3, 1996

It was on this day ten years ago that the man most wanted by many US law enforcement agencies was captured, bringing an end to a decades long reign of terror.

The poster child of anti-techological holy war had been snared because of tip-off. He was found in a remote cabin after his anti-techological manifesto was published and his own family realized he was the writer of that screed. Many researchers breathed a sigh of relief as they no longer had to gingerly examine every book sized package that arrived on their desks, fearing a grisly death.

This serial killer's name? Theodore 'Ted' Kaczynski aka the Unabomber. Ted pleaded guilty to his crimes of murdering three people and maiming 29 others on January 22, 1998. His guilty plea was upheld by the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. He is serving a life sentence without parole in a Federal SuperMax facility in Colorado.

I'll never forget that part of the motivation for his crime spree was Al Gore's book "Earth in the Balance" which was found in his shack.
