Vandals have managed to mangle yet another Christian symbol. Villagers at Glastonbury this morning woke up to a horrendous sight. Overnight a large thorn tree, Crategus Monogyna Bi Flora, that legend says grew from Joseph of Arimathea's staff was sawn apart until only the metal cage protected trunk remained standing.
Glastonbury Mayor John Coles rushed to the tree site after he heard the news.
Mr Coles, 66, said: 'I'm stood on Wearyall Hill looking at a sad, sad, sight. The tree has been chopped down - someone has taken a saw to it.
'Some of the main trunk is there but the branches have been sawn away. I am absolutely lost for words - I just do not know why people would want to do this.
There is some good news. Cromwell's Roundheads hacked this tree down and locals secreted the roots. They managed to save the tree and replanted it in 1951. Other cuttings from the same tree still exist. Though the vandals have tried to strike this tree down, it will surely rise again to bloom twice a year as it always has - at Easter and Christmas.
