Talk about a close call. I had seen other pictures of the casino barge but I never really appreciated how close it came to wiping out St. Michael's Catholic Church in Biloxi, MS. Until this picture taken by a National Guard medic came to my attention. It was taken on Sept. 11th, 2005 less than two weeks after Hurricane Katrina came ashore.

St. Michael's Catholic Church is located beyond Biloxi's casino row, just before the Ocean Springs bridge. This part of Biloxi is almost untouched by the casinos so retains much of the little fishing town feeling Biloxi used to have before things like Keelser AFB and the casinos came. Unfortunately judging by the shattered stain glass, St. Michael's did not totally escape being touched by Hurricane Katrina.
